SHU Makerspace

SHU’s IDEA (Innovative I Design I Engineer I Apply) Lab, is the home for Engineering programs but is open to the entire SHU community. Transdisciplinary projects are carried out in the space including but not limited to engineering, business, arts, and health sciences. In its 11,000 sq ft lab space, there are over 18 3D printers that enable projects from simple prototyping to commercial-grade product realization. Our fully equipped metal and woodworking space has mostly digital-controlled systems that eliminate the need for manual controls. Manual workshop tools are available for those familiar with working that way and who prefer manual operations. The electronics section of the lab allows students to build their own circuits, on breadboards or soldered circuit boards, and program microcontrollers. Several breakout rooms and conference rooms can hold project meetings or project group gatherings. A 24-seat classroom with electronic testing equipment in the lab is used for engineering instruction and lab classes. The characterization room also offers a unique capability of working with chemicals and utilizing Nikon stereo and optical microscopes.

3D printers include FormLabs, Gigabot, Ultimaker, and Prusa. Some other digital manufacturing equipment includes Epilog laser cutters / engravers, CNC routers, ProtoMax waterjet cutter, and a Voltera circuit prototyping system. Tektronix electronics instrumentation includes spectrum analyzer, LCR meter, oscilloscopes, function generators, power supplies, and high-resolution multimeters.
