Veterans Readmission Policy

Veterans Readmission Policy

Under the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 and in accordance with federal regulations, 34 C.F.R. § 668.18, Sacred Heart University will promptly readmit service members who seek readmission to an academic program of study interrupted by a called to active duty in the United States Armed Forces or the National Guard or Reserve for a period of more than 30 days. The student is entitled to reenroll in the same program, with the same enrollment status, number of credits, and academic standing as when he or she was last in attendance at Sacred Heart University.

Readmission is allowed provided the student meets the following requirements:

  • the cumulative length of the student’s absences from the University because of service on active duty does not exceed five years (may be extended in certain cases, as provided by statute)
  • the student gives notice to Sacred Heart University within three years after the completion of service that he or she intends to reenroll at the University
  • the returning student must be charged the same tuition and fees in effect during the last academic year the student attended unless veterans' education benefits or other service member education benefits will pay the amount in excess. For subsequent academic years, the returning student may not be charged tuition and fees in excess of what other students in the program are charged.
  • the returning student who receives a dishonorable or bad conduct discharge from the Armed Forces (including the National Guard and Reserves) are not eligible for readmission under this policy.

If called to Active Duty, contact one of the School Certifying Officials (SCO) and provide your orders. It is also recommended that you contact the admission offices so your program of study can be evaluated.
