EDR 569 Structured Literacy I
Structured Literacy I is a 36 hour virtual course which meets the coursework requirements for Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator designation with the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA). The coursework provides educators with the basic content knowledge of research-based explicit language instruction. It is the first step in preparing educators to use the OG approach to deliver Tier I and Tier II instruction within the general education classroom that is direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive and aligned with Orton-Gillingham Principles. The curriculum includes: an overview of dyslexia and reading disorders, brain research related to reading, the rationale of the OG approach, phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, elements of multi-sensory instruction, diagnostic and prescriptive teaching, and lesson planning. The OGA membership structure and requirements will also be covered.
