Veteran Education Benefits

Chapter 30:  The Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty

For qualified Servicepersons who entered active duty on or after June 30, 1985, and have paid into an education fund for one year.Payment is sent directly to the student from VA. Payments are usually sent the first day of the month following the start of courses.You must verify your attendance each month you are enrolled in courses. You can verify your attendance in W.A.V.E. Web Automated Verification of Enrollment or by calling the Interactive Voice Response telephone line (IVR) at 1-877-823-2378.

Chapter 31: Veteran Readiness and Employment Service

The Veteran Readiness and Employment Service program is for qualified Servicepersons with service-connected disabilities. To apply for services, Veterans and Service Members should submit VA Form 28-1900 to a VA Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor, Military Service Coordinator, and or VA Regional Office.

VR&E Counselors are assigned to students based on the Veteran’s county and state of residence. For students who are Connecticut residents, contact the Hartford Regional Office:

In addition to your DD-214 and Certificate of Eligibility, students will need to provide a copy of their VA Form 28-1905 Authorization of training to the School Certifying Official. This is issued by the Rehabilitation Counselor once benefits have been approved.

Funds are sent directly to the school by the VA. Books and supplies are covered by the VA – A bookstore voucher is issued to the student. All receipts are returned to the Student Accounts Office for processing.

Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill/Yellow Ribbon Program

The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program (Yellow Ribbon Program) is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. This program allows institutions of higher learning (degree-granting institutions) in the United States to voluntarily enter into an agreement with VA to fund tuition and mandatory fee expenses that exceed the national maximum amount payable under the Post-9/11 GI Bill® ($27,120.05 as of the 2023-2024 academic year). Sacred Heart University and VA will contribute up to the remainder of the tuition and fees not covered by the national maximum. Only individuals entitled to the maximum benefit rate (based on service requirements) may receive this funding. Students may be eligible if they served an aggregate period of active duty after September 10, 2001, of at least 36 months, if they were honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability, and served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001, or if they are dependents eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill® based on a veteran’s service under the eligibility criteria listed above.  Active-duty service members and spouses of active duty service members using transferred entitlement are not eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program.  Under transferred entitlement, a child of an active duty service member is eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program if the service member qualifies for the maximum benefit rate. Chapter 35:  Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance

The Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance program is available to eligible spouses and children of a veteran who has died while on active duty, or is permanently and totally disabled as a result of a service-related condition.

Payment is sent directly to the student from VA. Payments are usually sent the first day of the month following the start of courses. The current monthly payment for full-time training is $1,298.

Chapter 1606: Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve

If you are a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard Reserve, Army National Guard, or Air National Guard, you may be able to get up to 36 months of benefits. The Montgomery GI Bill®-Selected Reserve is for qualified Servicepersons who have signed a six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve signed after June 30, 1985.
